Lagos Mainland LGA Champions Education and Hygiene in Public Primary Schools
In a commendable display of commitment to education and environmental health, the Executive Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Hon. Mrs. Omolola Rashidat Essien, has spearheaded two significant initiatives. These efforts underscore her dedication to fostering a conducive learning environment for pupils in public primary schools within the local government area.
Roller Waste Bins Distribution: A Step Towards Cleaner Schools
On Tuesday, 27th August 2024, the Council Secretariat buzzed with activity as Hon. Mrs. Essien oversaw the distribution of roller waste bins to public primary schools. This initiative aligns perfectly with the Lagos T.H.E.M.E.+ Agenda on Health and Environment, demonstrating a proactive approach to maintaining cleanliness in educational institutions.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Mrs. Essien emphasised the critical role these bins will play in creating a hygienic environment for pupils. She noted, “Our aim is to prevent sudden outbreaks of epidemics that can arise from unclean surroundings. Proper disposal of daily waste in schools is crucial to avoid health issues.”
The Council Boss further elaborated on the importance of a clean, germ-free environment in preventing the rapid spread of diseases among pupils. These waste bins, she explained, will serve as an effective means of rubbish disposal.
Representing the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Education’s State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Secretary of Education for Lagos Mainland Local Government expressed gratitude for Hon. Mrs. Essien’s efforts. He lauded her contributions towards the well-being of staff and pupils, assuring that the waste bins would be put to good use.
Adding to the discussion, Sanitarian O.A. Pedro, Head of Department for Environment, mentioned the regular fumigation of public schools, particularly primary schools. He noted that the roller bins would facilitate easier waste collection by Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) operators.
Supporting Makoko’s Educational Growth
In a related development, Hon. Mrs. Essien has once again demonstrated her commitment to education, this time focusing on the Makoko community. Her support for the recent graduation ceremony and prize-giving day at the Makoko Children Development Foundation School and Orphanage earned her an award from the foundation’s founder, Ambassador Wheduto Urban January.
This gesture highlights Hon. Mrs. Essien’s dedication to the educational growth and development of children in the Makoko community, an area often overlooked in developmental initiatives.
Mr. Salawu Rasheed, Head of Department for Education and Library Services, was also recognised for his support towards the development of education in the Makoko community.
The event was graced by political functionaries, the management team, representatives from public primary schools, and members of the Makoko Children Development Foundation School and Orphanage.
