Lagos Mainland Launches Ambitious Health Initiative for Mothers and Children

In a bold move to improve public health, Lagos Mainland Local Government has kicked off a week-long health campaign focusing on maternal and child welfare. The initiative, which runs from August 1st to 7th, 2024, is part of the World Breastfeeding Week & Maternal, Newborn, Child & Adolescent Health (MNCAH) Plus Nutrition Week.

Centered at the Simpson Primary Health Care Center in Ebute-Metta, this year’s program carries the theme “Closing the Gap, Breastfeeding Support for All.” It’s a collaborative effort between the local government, the Lagos State Government Ministry of Health, and the Office of the First Lady of Lagos State.

Hon. Mrs. Omolola Rashidat Essien, the Executive Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, has been instrumental in bringing this initiative to fruition. “Our goal is to highlight the critical role of Primary Health Centers in community wellness,” she stated in a press release.

The week’s activities include a wide range of free health services, from nutritional assessments to immunizations and family planning counseling. This comprehensive approach aims to address various aspects of family health, with a particular focus on maternal and child care.

Dr. Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, praised the initiative, saying, “This program aligns perfectly with our T.H.E.M.E+ AGENDA, bringing us closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage.”

Public health experts view this as a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility in the area. Dr. Ademola Adekunle, a local health policy analyst, commented, “By strengthening Primary Health Centers, Lagos Mainland is addressing the health needs of the majority population. It’s a model that other local governments would do well to emulate.”

The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from local residents. Mrs. Folake Adebayo, a mother of two, expressed her appreciation: “Having these services available right in our community makes a huge difference. It’s much easier for us to access the care we need.”
