Lebanon Bears Mounting Toll as Israel Doubles Troops Along Border

Lebanon is reeling under the weight of a rapidly widening military campaign, with Israeli forces more than doubling troop deployments along the southern border since the beginning of March. Israel has been systematically clearing Lebanese villages in the south, targeting Hezbollah positions in what a senior Israeli commander described as a methodological advance toward the Litani River. Lebanese authorities confirm that more than one million people have registered as displaced since the campaign began, whilst the country’s Health Ministry reports that Israeli attacks have killed at least 45 people over two days alone. UNICEF has warned that Israeli strikes are killing or wounding 30 children in Lebanon daily — the equivalent of an entire classroom. In response, Hezbollah has continued firing heavy barrages of rockets toward Israel. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly described the Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon as an ‘error,’ warning that it would further inflame an already volatile region. Lebanon has appealed to Israel’s Western allies to intercede, and the United Nations Security Council is facing renewed pressure to convene emergency sessions. The conflict’s ripple effects are being felt far beyond the Levant, adding to the geopolitical strain driving global oil prices and disrupting humanitarian supply chains across the broader Middle East.
