President Tinubu and King Charles Reaffirm Nigeria-UK Bond in Historic Windsor State Visit

In a moment rich with both pageantry and purpose, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been received at Windsor Castle by His Majesty King Charles III, marking the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in nearly four decades — and the first ever by a democratically elected Nigerian president.

With trade between the two countries at a record high, King Charles used the occasion to highlight the depth of their cultural and commercial ties, welcoming President Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu with full state honours, including a guard of honour and a ceremonial gun salute.

At a lavish banquet held in the storied St George’s Hall, King Charles praised what he described as a “partnership of equals,” as senior officials, business leaders, and cultural figures from both nations gathered, underscoring deepening diplomatic and economic ties.

The King struck a remarkably human note throughout the evening. Praising the contributions of Nigerians living in Britain — from the NHS to universities and the arts — he closed his toast with a now-viral flourish: “Naija no dey carry last.”

President Tinubu, speaking as the first Nigerian leader to address guests at Windsor Castle, called on the United Kingdom to join Nigeria in confronting terrorism in the Sahel, warning that complex security threats risk engulfing the wider West African region.

On the economic front, President Tinubu witnessed the signing of a landmark £746 million financing agreement between UK Export Finance and the Nigerian Ports Authority, supporting the refurbishment of the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port.

Relations between both nations are underpinned by a strategic partnership agreed in 2024, covering growth, defence, security, migration, and people-to-people links. Today, the President is expected to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer, before engaging with members of the Nigerian diaspora — a community that, in many ways, has long been the living bridge between these two great nations.
